Employment Overview
Durham County EMS is a fast paced EMS system looking for enthusiastic individuals to work twelve hour shifts on a 28
day modified Dupont schedule. Employees work a total of fourteen rotating daytime and night shifts in a three week
period with a continuous eight day break every twenty one days. Interested individuals will render emergency and
non-emergency medical care to critically ill or injured persons of all ages on an advanced life support level.
Comprehensive protocols allow our EMT’s, Intermediates and Paramedics to utilize their skills and knowledge to their
fullest. 12 lead EKG interpretation with direct contact with cardiologists for immediate transport to the cath lab,
Capnography via Zoll M and E Series monitors, Adult EZ IO’s, CPAP, Needle chricothyrotomy and a wide variety of other
procedures are routine aspects of our delivery of pre-hospital medicine.
Durham County EMS is currently active in prehospital research and has participated in various research studies including:
Comparison of the five-electrode-derived EASI electrocardiogram to the Mason Likar electrocardiogram in the prehospital
setting published in the American Journal of Cardiology August 2005 and Paramedic transtelephonic communication to
cardiologists of clinical and electrocardiographic assessment for rapid reperfusion of S-T elevation myocardial infarction
published in the Journal of Electrocardiology July 2007.
Durham County EMS also provides extensive injury prevention and public education to the community and is a active member of
the Durham Safe Kids Coalition.
Durham County full-time employees receive a generous benefits package that includes medical, dental and life insurance,
retirement options, long and short term disability, paid monthly continuing education, 11 paid holidays, employee
assistance plan tuition reimbursement, employee wellness clinic and flex spending programs. Durham County will contribute
$444.00 Flex Dollars to each full time permanent employee each month to help offset insurance costs. EMS employees are provided
uniforms, name tag, safety equipment, footwear, Nomex Jumpsuit, rain and winter outerwear.
All candidates must posses a National Registry or North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services EMT-Basic, Intermediate
or Paramedic certification (or pending). A valid NC driver's license, a good driving record and American Heart Association
Basic Life Support Certification.
Employment is contingent upon completion of an assessment center, pre-employment drug screen, driver’s license check, criminal
record check, and a skills validation program during a six month probationary period.
